Indiana Board Approves New Education Standards
April 28, 2014 — Elle Moxley, Indiana Public Broadcasting — The State Board of Education voted today (Monday) to adopt new standards to replace the Common Core in Indiana.
The new standards have the backing of Governor Mike Pence, who promised new education standards quote “by Hoosiers, for Hoosiers” during his State of the State address.
But opponents of the nationally-crafted Common Core expectations say the new standards are just a rebranding of sub par expectations. The majority of speakers who testified before the board vote were opposed to adoption of the standards.
Only state board member Andrea Neal voted against the proposed expectations, which will be used in Indiana schools next year.
