A 33-year-old South Holland man died early this morning when he crashed his car on I-80-94 at I-65.
Indiana State Police say David Pettiford was headed west in the right center lane of I-80/94, under the I-65 overpass, at a high rate of speed when Troopers think he hit the rear of a moving semi-truck. The trucker continued west, never stopping.
Pettiford was trapped in his vehicle. He was taken to North Lake Methodist Hospital in Gary, where he was later pronounced dead of massive trauma. Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash.
The right two westbound lanes of 80-94 at the accident scene were closed for about 3 and a half hours as police investigated the crash and Pettiford’s vehicle was towed away.
