IHSAA Tackling Football Game Venue Decision

October 17,2013 — The Indiana High School Athletic Association says today its evaluation of a local high school football facility is underway to determine whether it should host playoff games that start next week.

IHSAA Sports Information Director Jason Wille says IHSAA Assistant Commissioner Robert Faukens is working with Gary’s West Side Leadership Academy (high school) and Lowell Public Schools to determine a location for their first-round sectional playoff game set for Friday, October 25.

Wille says IHSAA has no sure destination yet, after West Side had been the designated home team to host the game.  Wille says he expects a decision about the game’s venue in next 24 hours, by Friday morning.

The field at West Side Leadership Academy in Gary is the subject of a complaint filed with the Indiana High School Athletics Association.

According to the anonymous complaint the field might not be in suitable condition for next week’s sectional game against the Lowell Red Devils.  Previous West Side home games this season have been interrupted or moved to other fields because of problems with lighting, inaccurate time keeping and officiating.

Wille told Lakeshore News that Faulkens was in Gary this week to meet with school officials.  Wille said the results of that visit will not be made public, however the organization’s website will be updated to reflect the location of the game if it is moved.

Numerous attempts by Lakeshore News to contact Gary’s athletic director have been unsuccessful.

Lakeshore Sports Director Joe Arredondo notes that West Side has a collegiate division 1-caliber quarterback and two D-1 recruits for wide receivers, playing at a program that forfeited one game this year due to unlicensed officials.
