Hoosier Delegation Safe After DC Shooting
October 3, 2013 — Indiana Public Broadcasting reports that all members of Indiana’s congressional delegation and their staffs are safe after a shooting outside the U.S. Capitol complex in Washington today. Click to hear IPBS’ Brandon Smith’s report.
Many members of Indiana’s congressional delegation took to social media during and after a lockdown at the Capitol complex.
Senator Dan Coats tweeted that he was with his staff and asked for prayers for law enforcement responding to the shooting. 2nd District Congresswoman Jackie Walorski sent several updates on Twitter, noting she and her staff were all safe while sending thoughts and prayers to victims of the incident.
Lauren Burke is the spokeswoman for 7th District Congressman Andre Carson. She says she was in Carson’s office with several other staff members when the building’s internal intercom system sent out a “Shelter in Place” alert, “I wouldn’t say panic – I wouldn’t go that far – but I would say definitely we were surprised and we were taking action to, of course, call the police.”
The lockdown was lifted around 3 p.m.—about 30 minutes after it started.
