October 21, 2013 — A Highland firefighter is dead after a crash involving a City off–road vehicle.

The Lake County Coroner’s records show that the 50-year-old driver Richard Haschke of Highland was pronounced dead at the scene.

Highland police say that when they were dispatched to the 2900 block of Condit Street around 3:30 a.m. Sunday, they found an off-road vehicle lying on its side.

According to a statement from Highland Police the vehicle is property of the Highland Fire Department, where Haschke was a firefighter, though not authorized to use the vehicle and not responding to any type of incident.  Two passengers were also treated for injuries and released.
