September 10, 2013 — Today’s record-hot temperatures caused problems across the Region.

South Shore commuter trains were forced to operate at reduced speeds due to the extreme heat.  The Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District which operates the South Shore line says many riders experienced delays of 10 to 20 minutes due to heat.

In Gary five schools dismissed students early due to heat issues.  Glen Park Academy, Brunswick and Wirt–Emerson each closed before noon while Pulaski and Lew Wallace dismissed students at 12:30 p.m.

Gary’s high temperature reached 96, while new official high temperature records occurred at Valparaiso with 97 degrees and O’Hare Airport at 95 degrees.
