August 19, 2014 — Network Indiana — A national health care company says data from more than 4.5 million patients has been stolen.

Community Health Systems officials say hackers used “sophisticated malware” to attack the company’s security systems and take addresses, Social Security numbers, birthdays and phone numbers were taken in April and June.  The company said it hired cybersecurity experts to look into an attack believed to originate from China.

Community Health Systems operates over 200 hospitals in 29 states, including Porter Hospital in Valparaiso and several other hospitals in northern Indiana.
