Grissom Elementary School In Gary Closes
Grissom Elementary School in Gary closed its doors for the final time yesterday afternoon, as students raced outside to their buses on the last day of the school year. The Lake Ridge School Board voted in March to close the 57-year-old Black Oak school because the district faces a $1.7-million budget shortfall.
Parents say Lake Ridge school officials haven’t yet told them where their kids will be next year.
Lake Ridge Superintendent Sharon Johnson-Shirley says they became aware of the current budget crunch in December when the district collected only 76-percent of its taxes, when it normally collected between 90- and 92-percent. She also says the property tax cap, declining enrollment, state education funding cuts and the 20-8 recession affected the school district.
