November 8, 2013 — Indiana Governor Mike Pence today issued a proclamation declaring Saturday, November 9, 2013, as Larry Bird Day in Indiana.

The proclamation coincides with the official dedication of a 15-foot bronze statue of Bird at Indiana State University.

Pence says, “Through his athleticism, passion, leadership and tenacity, Larry Bird helped to transform the game of basketball into the one Hoosiers know and love today.  Larry Bird Day celebrates the legacy and success of this extraordinary Hoosier as an all-star NBA player, Olympian, and Indiana Pacers coach and executive.  On behalf of the State of Indiana, I thank him for his contributions and for representing the Hoosier state well on a national level.”

Bird is a native Hoosier whose Indiana State University team played for the NCAA men’s basketball national championship in 1979.  He spent his professional basketball playing career with the National Basketball Association’s Boston Celtics, winning three NBA championships, before returning to Indiana to manage the NBA’s Indiana Pacers.
