August 7, 2017 — The 161st Lake County Fair has a new way to get some of its neighbors to the event today. The Gary Public Transportation Corporation, East Chicago Transit Service and North Township Dial-a-ride are collaborating to provide a low-cost lift to the fair.

The Lake County Fair Transit Day schedule:

The Transit Day north end pick-up and drop-off point for the Fair bus route is Griffith Plaza with the last trip leaving at 7:16 pm. East Chicago Transit will run regular service to Griffith Plaza with North Township shuttles running to the Plaza as well. GPTC runs the route from Griffith Plaza to the Lake County Fairgrounds, stopping at the County Government Center in Crown Point en route.

It leaves Griffith Plaza at 10 am, noon, 2 pm, 3 pm, 4 pm and 5 pm.

Return trips from the Fairgrounds north to the Government Center and on to Griffith Plaza leave the Fair at 11 am, 1 pm, 3 pm, 4 pm, 5 pm and 7 pm.

The trip costs $1 each way.

The following information is from GPTC Planning and Marketing Representative David Wright:

“On Wednesday, August 7th, the East Chicago Transit Service (E.C.T.), Gary Public Transportation Corporation (GPTC) and North Township Dial-A-Ride are partnering with the Lake County Fair to provide low cost bus transportation to the Lake County Fairgrounds to enjoy a day at the Fair!

The pick-up/drop off point to and from the fair will be Griffith Plaza, in front of the old Service Merchandise Store. E.C.T. will operate their regular service to the Plaza, with the last trip from Griffith Plaza leaving at 7:16 PM. The North Township shuttles will pick up riders at Wolf Lake, Civic Center, Wicker Park, the Visitor’s Center, and K-Mart and proceed to the Griffith Plaza pick-up/drop off point.

GPTC will operate from Griffith Plaza to the Lake County Fair, starting at 10:00 am on August 7th, and continuing to pick up at 12:00 pm, 2:00 pm, 3:00 pm, 4:00 pm, with the last pick up at 5:00 pm on that day. For each southbound and northbound trip, the bus will stop at the Lake County Government Center to connect with GPTC’s Broadway routes and for any other fairgoers who would like to park there and ride GPTC’s bus to the Fair. Northbound service from the Fair to the Plaza will be at 11:00 am, 1:00 pm, 3:00 pm, 4:00 pm, 5:00 pm, with the last bus leaving the Fair at 7:00 pm.

Northbound and Southbound service to the Fair and back to the Plaza will cost $1.00 each way. GPTC’s free transfers from other GPTC routes; #23 at Griffith Plaza, #17 and #18 at the Government Center, will be honored.

The transit companies approached the Lake County Fair Board with this idea. The Fair Board is very excited to try this transportation idea this year and hopes these transit companies will increase their routes to include more days for future fairs.
