Golfers Take Swing at Food Bank Drive
October 7, 2013 — One local business took a swing at ending hunger today for some Northwest Indiana families by hitting the greens.
The Majestic Star Casino and Hotel hosted its fourth annual team golf fundraiser to benefit The Food Bank of Northwest Indiana.
More than 50 workers and vendors teamed up at the Sherwood Golf Course in Schererville.
The money raised will help The Food Bank supply fresh produce for one hundred agencies across Lake and Porter Counties.
Former National Basketball Association Chicago Bulls player Cliff Levingston also played the holes to help fill pantries, “It’s a lot of people in need. Not because they don’t want to work or don’t have the means to work. It’s just that work is not available. And it’s a lot of families who were well off a couple years ago, now they are struggling a little bit. And with food banks and people out there helping people get on their feet, that’s the most important thing, especially in northwest Indiana.”
Food Bank of Northwest Indiana Procurement Manager Victor Ortiz says, “Events like this because these are monetary donations and with monetary donations, we need that because we don’t have a lot of manufacturers in our areas here in Lake or Porter county of Indiana. We don’t have your Kelloggs in our yard or Tysons so we rely heavily on the monetary donations so that we’re able to purchase by the full truckloads.”
