Gary’s Mayor Repeats State Police Request
July 24, 2013 — Gary Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson is giving Indiana’s governor a response … as he requested. The Mayor’s Office says she sent another letter yesterday to Governor Mike Pence requesting state police support.
She also is giving him a law enforcement plan. Pence requested a City plan for police action after the Mayor asked him for state support for Gary’s policing efforts for 90-days. The Mayor wrote, “Since writing that letter, several more homicides have occurred claiming the lives of young African-American males. The situation in our community is now beyond urgent.”
In a plan she calls “GI for Life” the Mayor outlines strategies against violence in Gary, Indiana, noting that in 2013 Gary has “an unprecedented spike in violent crime” with 31 homicides so far this year, an increase by 50% compared to last year.
