October 1, 2013 — The Gary/Chicago International Airport has a new interim director, effective today.

The Airport Authority voted unanimously yesterday to appoint City of Gary Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson’s Chief of Staff B.R. Lane as the airport’s new interim director.

The motion, initiated by board member Shontrai Irving and supported by Alesia Pritchett, both appointed by Gary Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson, stated that Lane begins working in the capacity of interim director Tuesday, October 1.

Board member James Cooper reminded the board that Lane must pass security clearance first before obtaining full access to the airport.

Board President Thomas Collins stated after the meeting that the board agreed to enter into an employment contract with Lane because she has been actively engaged with all airport parities on a local, state and federal level.  He added that Lane shares the board’s major objectives of completing the runway expansion project and developing sustainable sources of revenue for the airport.

Gary Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson also voiced her support of the board’s decision to select Lane.  She stated Lane will not continue as her Chief of Staff and that work will begin to select her replacement.
