Gary to Raze Houses, Pending Thursday Hearing

Share Tweet Email

November 30, 2013 — The City of Gary plans to demolish about 60 poorly maintained, unsafe houses whose owners have one last chance to save their buildings from the wrecking ball.

The property owners can plead their cases December 5th at an unsafe building hearing.  The houses of property owners who don’t show up at that hearing will likely be slated for demolition.

Gary demolition coordinator Cedric Kuykendall tells The Post-Tribune such demolition orders could be dismissed if a property owner promises to improve the condition of their house.

For those who don’t, the city will place a lien on the property so the owner won’t be able to sell the land until the demolition cost is paid.

Demolition costs average between $7,000 and $10,000 per residence.
