Gary Street Repaving Plan Unveiled
July 25, 2014 — The city of Gary plans to re-surface 55 streets this summer.
Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson, several members of her leadership team and Common Council members took a field trip earlier this year, driving the entire city identifying areas in need of paving. They then had to set priorities. The mayor says last winter’s cold and snow caused many potholes to form, not to mention “an abundance” of streets that have been in need of repair for years.
Missing from the list of 55 streets to be paved is 15th Avenue, which will be paved through another project being spearheaded by the Gary Sanitary District. City officials are also talking with neighboring communities to share in the cost of paving streets that are entryways.
Reith Riley was awarded the $6.4 million contract and will be paid in three installments through 2016. Reith Riley will subcontract milling work to Day’s Asphalt of Gary. City Hall says Gary residents will be hired to work on this project.
