Gary School Bus Halt Averted By Financial Agreement
November 4, 2014 — Gary Community Schools students will be able to ride the buses to their buildings, as they have so far this school year — now that the school district and the private company that runs the bus service reached an agreement.
Illinois Central School Bus Company had planned to halt bus service next Monday, but CEO Steve Hammerlein said in a statement yesterday that the Gary Community Schools secured the funding needed to maintain the contract with the company.
Illinois Central School Bus told Superintendent Cheryl Pruitt on September 10th that bus service would end on November 10th unless a payment plan was established.
Hammerlein acknowledged the efforts of Dr. Pruitt and her team along with the State Board of Education in coming up with the funding. He also recognized the community support the company received in their talks with the Gary school district.

We are pleased to announce that Gary Community School Corporation (GCSC) has secured funding to uphold their end of the contract with Illinois Central School Bus (ICSB) and we will continue bus service for Gary Schools.
On Sept. 24, 2014, ICSB notified GCSC superintendent Dr. Cheryl Pruitt that unless a payment plan was established ICSB would stop providing bus service on Nov. 10, 2014.
We appreciate the efforts of Dr. Pruitt and her team along with the State Board of Education. We are thankful for the community support we’ve received during these negotiations and look forward to continuing to serve the families and children of Gary.
