December 13, 2013 — The Gary Police Department is investigating a shooting today that involves a four-year-old boy.

Police Corporal Gabrielle King says at approximately 10:48 a.m. a grandmother took her four-year-old grandson to an emergency room for treatment for what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Police say the grandmother reports the incident occurred at a house in the 1900 block of Rhode Island Street, telling officers  she was inside of the house and heard what sounded like a pop before she heard her grandson say he was hurt.

King says when the woman checked the boy to see if he was injured  she saw a hole in his coat, and removing his coat she saw  he was bleeding from his arm.  King says at that point she and her friend took him to the emergency room for treatment.

Police invite related information to Detective Corporal Shana Peter at 219-881-1218.

King said nobody was in custody in the case this afternoon, as it was unknown at the time if charges would be filed in the case.
