Gary Police In Gunfire Exchange
July 26, 2013 — As Gary’s mayor awaits the Governor’s reply to her request for police support Gary police became gunfire targets themselves.
Gary police say that about 7:40 pm Wednesday officers on routine patrol saw a man run across in front of their car with a gun in-hand. Police Corporal Gabrielle King says they were in the Dorie Miller Housing Development where they’d heard shots fired.
She says when officers ordered the man to drop the weapon he fired shots at officers who then returned fire before the man got away, though dropping his weapon. King says no one was injured in the incident.
Earlier that same day Gary Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson’s had renewed her appeal to Indiana Governor Mike Pence for State support for Gary’s police force in an effort against criminal violence in Gary. She noted to the Governor that Gary’s homicide rate, at least 31 so far in 2013, is 50% higher than 2012.
