On Thursday, city officials hosted a press conference to share details of its Strong Cities, Strong Communities Initiative and a status update on the Sheraton demolition project. Each discussed their role in the new initiative which the City of Gary was selected to participate in by the Obama Administration.

“As promised, we wanted to keep the community informed of when this very significant partnership would begin,” said Freeman-Wilson. “We now have federal representatives in place here at City Hall, and they are working with us on a daily basis to help us make visible impacts in various neighborhoods throughout the city.”

Redevelopment Director Joe Van Dyk and Green Urbanism Director Brenda Scott-Henry gave an overview of the Sheraton demolition timeline. The project remains on track with official demolition slated to begin July 26.
