Gary Airport Tower Closing Delayed Until June 15
The Federal Aviation Administration announced on Friday that it will delay until June closing air traffic control towers at 149 airports, including Gary. The closing is now set for June 15th.
Airports affected are those where the towers are staffed by professionals contracted through the F-A-A. The closures are the result of the federal budget stand off in Washington where across the board cuts have been mandated because of sequestration.
Gary has announced 30,733 operations a year, and officials say the airport can safely continue service without controllers. The only other Indiana airport affected is Columbus which has 41,931 operations annually.
