Former Hoosier Player Devan Dumes Has Acquittal
September 17, 2013 — (AP) — An Indianapolis jury has acquitted former Indiana University basketball player Devan Dumes of attempted murder and other charges.
The 25-year-old Dumes also was found not guilty of theft and carjacking charges Tuesday after his attorney claimed the former player was defending himself in January when he shot a drug dealer who wanted him to deliver cocaine to pay off a $225 debt.
The shooting victim, Keith Jones, had testified Monday that Dumes shot him in the neck while stealing his car.
Dumes played two seasons at Indiana, leading the team in scoring as a junior for the 2008-09 season with 12 points per game.
In a separate case, Dumes still faces charges of possessing illegal drugs and an unlicensed gun.
