Former Gary Police Officer Sentenced to 30 Months in Prison

September 13, 2013 — A former Gary Police Officer has a 30-month prison sentence for presenting false information to a federal court.

According the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Hammond, 32-year-old David Finley Jr. of Merrillville was arrested in August 2012 for multiple charges committed during a three week period, including purchasing a handgun for a convicted felon and selling marijuana.

Court records say that while awaiting sentencing on those charges, Finley submitted fake character letters to the court.  In addition to the 2½ years sentence, Finley faces 2 years of supervised release.

The case result from an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation GRIT Task Force and the Gary Police Department.
