Former Council Member Delays Sentencing
August 21, 2013 — Another federal court sentencing date is set for a former Gary City Council member.
The Hammond Office of the Federal Court for the District of Northern Indiana says October 29, 2013 is the new sentencing date for Marilyn Krusas.
The 69-year-old former Gary First District council member had pleaded “guilty” before District Judge Joseph Van Bokkelen to the felony offense of tax evasion. Sentencing had been set for July 11, 2013, then delayed to August 21, 2013 before today’s continuance.
The criminal charge was filed as a result of an investigation by the Internal Revenue Service-Criminal Investigation Division in a case prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Gary Bell that indicated Krusas concealed more than $200,000 in inheritance to avoid reporting it for taxes.
