First busy night of play in hoops
(AP) — The NBA opened up a new season last night with three games, including league champion San Antonio at home against Dallas. The Spurs won their opener against the Mavericks, 101-100.
Coming up tonight the Oklahoma City Thunder, who have reached the Western Conference finals in three of the past four years, will start a new season without league MVP Kevin Durant. The reigning league scoring champ will miss a considerable portion of the season after undergoing surgery on his right foot Oct. 16. His status will be evaluated six weeks after the date of the surgery. Tonight the Thunder open the season in Portland for a game with the Blazers.
Last season the Philadelphia 76ers were terrible. They finished with just 19 wins on the season and as they open a new campaign tonight in Indianapolis against the banged-up Pacers, things do not look very promising for this year.
The new-look Miami Heat start their new season tonight at home against Washington. The Wizards are fresh off an appearance in the playoffs last season while the last time we saw the Heat they were losing to the Spurs in the NBA Finals. Since then they of course lost LeBron James, who chose to return to the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Two teams that will have a lot to say about how good Cleveland’s season will be are squaring off tonight in New York. The Knicks, with a rejuvenated Carmelo Anthony, are playing host to the Bulls, who feature a healthy Derrick Rose.
The remaining games tonight feature the Bucks at Charlotte, Toronto at home to the Hawks, Brooklyn’s Nets in Boston to face the Celtics, Minnesota at Memphis, Detroit playing at Denver, Utah at home to the Rockets, the Kobe Bryant led Lakers at Phoenix and the Kings at home to the Warriors.
