Fires In Hammond And LaPorte Under Investigation
Hammond fire officials are investigating a suspicious fire that occurred over the weekend. Deputy Fire Chief Kevin Margraf says the fire occurred in the 600 block of State Street Saturday morning. This is the 5th suspicious fire in the same neighborhood in three weeks. It was put out in about 30 minutes and no injuries were reported. Margraf says the fire is suspicious, but the case of the fire has been undetermined at this time. Fire investigators are canvassing the neighborhood seeking information from residents. They spoke with the building owner briefly on Saturday and plan to talk with him more at length.
Officials are investigating the cause of a Sunday afternoon apartment fire in LaPorte. On arrival, police officers saw black smoke coming from the apartment windows. No one was in the apartment at the time. The residents returned home while the fire department was putting out the blaze. They told police they left their apartment about an hour earlier and that everything was fine at the time. No one fighting the fire was hurt. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
