Fighting Crime A Community Effort
JULY 31, 2013 — As the City of Gary waits for word from Indiana Governor Mike Pence about its request for state support for Gary police the City recorded its 33rd murder of the year.
Gary has experienced an alarming rate of murders this year, increased 50% over 2012 despite the fact that crime rates have decreased dramatically since they peaked in the mid-1990’s. That was the last time Gary leaders called on the state for help, until this month when Gary Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson asked Governor Pence for additional state troopers to monitor the city.
28-year Gary Police veteran, and Department spokesperson, Corporal Gabrielle King talked about Gary’s crime situation with Lakeshore’s Jodi Juhl.
