PARIS (AP) — Fourth seed and former French Open winner Roger Federer has been bounced from this year’s tournament. He was beaten in a fourth-round match by 18th seed Ernests Gulbis 6-7, 7-6, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, ending Federer’s streak of nine consecutive quarterfinals at the French Open. For Federer, a 17-time Grand Slam champion, it was the earliest exit at Roland Garros since 2004, when he was beaten in the third round by three-time champion Gustavo Kuerten. The 32-year-old Federer has bowed out before the quarterfinals at three of the last four majors, including a fourth-round loss at the U.S. Open in September.

In other Day 8 results, second-seed Novak Djokovic easily beat 13th-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-1, 6-4, 6-1 in only 1½ hours to reach the quarterfinals for the 20th major tournament in a row. Djokovic needs a title at Roland Garros to complete a career Grand Slam. He lost the 2012 final and in last year’s semifinals to top-seed Rafael Nadal . Sixth seed Tomas Berdych  has advanced to the quarterfinals with a win over 10th-seeded American John Isner , and Andy Murray, the seventh seed, advanced from the third round to the fourth. With Isner’s demise there are no more American men left in the tournament.

In women’s play seventh-seed Maria Sharapova has reached the quarterfinals by taking the last nine games and beating Samantha Stosur 3-6, 6-4, 6-0. After dropping the first set, Sharapova trailed 4-3 in the second. But she didn’t allow Stosur another game, reeling off 22 of 25 points to take control.

Sharapova reached the final at Roland Garros the last two years, winning the title to complete a career Grand Slam in 2012, then finishing as the runner-up to Serena Williams in 2013.
