GLENEAGLES, Scotland (AP) — Europe won three of the alternate shot matches to take a 5-3 lead over the United States after the first day of the Ryder Cup.

With the United States ahead 2½-1½ after Friday morning’s fourballs, Europe won three of the alternate-shot matches in the second session and halved the fourth.

Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson beat Hunter Mahan and Zach Johnson 2 and 1 for their second win of the day.

The Americans looked like they were on the way to their only win of the afternoon session when Rickie Fowler and Jimmy Walker lead Rory McIlroy and Sergio Garcia 2 up with two holes to play. But the European duo won both to halve the match.

The US led 2 1/2 to 1 1/2 after the morning fourball session.
