Essay Contest Honors Historical Female Hoosiers

INDIANAPOLIS – Students in fifth through ninth grade have a chance to visit the Indiana Statehouse as a special guest of first lady Karen Pence through an essay writing challenge.
The Hoosier Heroine Essay Contest asks students to write a political, cultural or personal essay based on a pivotal moment in United States or Indiana history, and the role Hoosier women played in it.
Several female leaders in Indiana government will choose one winner from each eligible grade level.
Lt. Gov. Sue Ellspermann will choose the fifth grade winner, Secretary of State Connie Lawson will choose the sixth grade winner, State Auditor Suzanne Crouch will pick the seventh grade winner, State Treasurer Kelly Mitchell will choose the winner from eighth grade, and State Superintendent Glenda Ritz will pick the ninth grade winner.
The deadline for the essay is Feb. 20, and the winners will be notified by March 12. On March 26, the essay winner award program will take place at the Statehouse.
