Share Tweet Email

November 23, 2013 — Gary police say a man who injured two officers when he escaped from custody shortly after being sentenced to a year in jail has surrendered to authorities.

Police Corporal Gabrielle King says 21-year-old Jamal Haskins of Gary turned himself in today at the city’s Public Safety Facility.

She says Haskins could face additional criminal charges, including battery on law enforcement officers and escape.

Police say Haskins kicked one officer and shoved the other down onto concrete, injuring both officers, yesterday as he was being moved to a van to bring him to the Lake County Jail in Crown Point.

Haskins had just been sentenced one year in jail for failing to comply with a program that allows mentally ill defendants to avoid prosecution by receiving treatment.
