England taking youthful squad to World Cup
LUTON, England (AP) — England coach Roy Hodgson has selected a World Cup team of several young players, although Frank Lampard was among the veterans to make the cut.
The 35-year-old Lampard is the oldest player among the 23 that Hodgson is taking to Brazil, one of only six to have previously been to a World Cup.
Nine players have yet to reach double-digit appearances for England, which won its only World Cup title in 1966.
The most inexperienced player is 18-year-old Southampton defender Luke Shaw, who displaced 33-year-old Ashley Cole from the squad despite only making his international debut in March.
Ross Barkley, a 20-year-old Everton midfielder, and 19-year-old Liverpool winger Raheem Sterling are going to the World Cup despite having only five appearances between them.
