Encouraging Safe Driving Could be Rewarding

March 4th – Several state agencies are teaming up to spread the message that texting while driving is both dangerous and illegal in Indiana.

The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles, Indiana Criminal Justice Institute, Indiana Department of Labor, Indiana Department of Transportation and Indiana State Police have partnered to offer $5000 scholarships to students who use their smartphones to encourage other teens to “Drive Now. TXT L8R”.

To participate, students must use the hashtag #TXTL8RIN in social media posts throughout the month of April which discourage texting while driving. Scholarships will be awarded at both the high school and college level in five categories:

1.         Twitter – most tweets, retweets and favorites

2.         Vine – most likes

3.         Vine – most creative

4.         Instagram – most likes

5.         Instagram – most creative

Students can work in teams of up to three on a single account, and may enter separately on each social media platform. Winners will receive a deposit of $5,000 into their 529 college savings plan. Students may register their public Twitter accounts and read contest rules at www.txtl8r.in.gov. The contest runs April 1 – 30, 2014.
