Elderly Rail Commuter Robbed in Hammond
June 27, 2014 — An 84 year old man was assaulted and robbed Friday morning while walking on the train platform at the NICTD Hammond South Shore Station, at 4531 Hohman Avenue.
NICTD Police Chief Robert Byrd said the man had just purchased a newspaper from inside the train station, and was walking on the boarding platform, when he was assaulted and robbed of his wallet.
Transit Police describe the suspect as a tall, stocky, black male, mid-20’s to early-30’s, wearing a sleeveless gray t-shirt, and dark jeans with embroidered designs sewn into the rear pockets. The offender ran south on Johnson Avenue from the station after the robbery. Hammond Police immediately deployed a police K9 unit to perform a search of the area.
