E-911 Consolidation Not Likely Until Early 2015
November 21, 2014 — Lake County won’t make the year-end deadline to consolidate its emergency communications operations into a county-wide system. Instead, E-911 Director Brian Hitchcock says they hope to be up and running within the first three months of 2015.
Hitchcock told a Lake County Public Safety Communications Commission meeting on Thursday that the radio transmission and reception towers in Gary, Hobart and south Lake County have yet to be built, and the call and dispatch center and its staff are still being assembled.
Six years ago, state legislators mandated Lake County to merge its 17 police, fire and emergency medical services by Jan. 1st, 2015. County officials waited until last year to hire Hitchcock and earlier this year to begin major construction and equipment purchases.
Hitchcock says the transition between systems will be a lot like the present collection of separate county, city and town dispatch centers.
