Donnelly, Coats Call For VA Indiana Review
May 21, 2014 — Indiana Public Broadcasting — Indiana Senators Joe Donnelly and Dan Coats are calling on Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki to review the state’s VA facilities in response to widespread concerns about alleged problems at centers across the country. Indiana Public Broadcasting’s Brandon Smith reports:
Earlier this month, American Legion National Commander Daniel Dellinger called for leadership changes at the VA after reports of manipulated wait times, delayed care, falsification of medical records and patient deaths at VA medical centers across the nation. An American Legion task force is conducting an audit at the Roudebush Veterans Affairs Hospital in Indianapolis this week. In a letter to Secretary Shinseki, Donnelly and Coats say the reported issues raise serious concerns about what they call a “systematic attempt” within the VA to undermine congressional oversight. The Hoosier Senators say they want Shinseki to immediately verify whether the same problems took place in Indiana. A top Veterans Affairs official resigned last week; Shinseki has so far resisted calls for him to step down.
