Cyclists Honor Fallen Merrillville Policeman
September 12, 2014 — Hundreds of motorcyclists, police officers and other emergency responders and residents paid tribute last evening to fallen Merrillville police officer Nick Schultz.
The Unforgotten Souls Motorcycle Club held a Rose Ride, which is the club’s traditional way of honoring police officers and firefighters who die in the line of duty. They dropped flowers by the roadside in a slow procession. After all the Rose Ride participants had arrived, the flowers were added to those already on Schultz’s squad car.
Last night’s was the third Rose Ride. It did one for New Carlisle firefighter Jamie Middlebrook in August and for slain Gary police officer Jeffery Westerfield in July.
