Coast Guard Cautions Lake Michigan Holiday Boaters
July 5, 2013 — The U.S. Coast Guard is reminding boaters to use caution when out on the water this holiday weekend. The Independence Day weekend is typically one of the busiest times of year on Lake Michigan and inland waters.
Captain Matthew Sibley is commander of Coast Guard Sector Lake Michigan. He says alcohol use was the leading contributing factor in deadly boating accidents last year. Captain Sibley says boaters should plan ahead and ensure they have a sober operator. Recreational boats also must carry a wearable life jacket for each person on board.
