June 25, 2013 — Demolition of the former Cline Avenue Bridge’s finished, and now… the Indiana Department of Transportation transferred its right-of-way holdings to a private company.
INDOT and East Chicago Mayor Anthony Copeland signed land exchange agreements last year with Cline Avenue Bridge LLC to build a new toll bridge entirely with private funds. It is a team made up of United Bridge Partners of American Infrastructure MLP Funds, FIGG Bridge Companies of Florida and Lane Construction Corporation.
INDOT spokesman Will Wingfield says about $3 million in resurfacing and paving work will also go to sections of the highway up to the new toll bridge as part of the land swap agreement. The new bridge must also meet clearance and environmental permitting requirements for the Indiana Harbor Canal.
INDOT condemned and closed the old Cline Avenue bridge in 20-09 because of structural deterioration. It could cost between $150 million and $250 million.to build the new one.
