INDIANAPOLIS – Mike Claytor plans to announce his run for state auditor on Thursday, making him the first Democrat to announce his candidacy for the position.

Claytor is an accountant and attorney. He previously worked for the Indiana State Board of Accounts, where he was appointed as deputy state examiner under then-Gov. Robert Orr. His job involved working on white-collar crime investigations while also ensuring the state government’s integrity.

Later, Claytor retired from Crowe Horwath LLP as a partner.

According to his website, his mission is to increase transparency and accountability when it comes to spending Hoosier tax dollars. He also wants to make sure funds are spent on authorized projects and put the State Board of Accounts back in the auditor’s office.

Claytor will spend coming weeks on a statewide tour announcing his candidacy. If chosen as the Democrat nominee – a decision that will be made , he will likely run against Republican Dwayne Sawyer, who was sworn as state auditor in August.
