Clayton Kershaw reaches 20 wins as Dodgers pound Cubs
CHICAGO (AP) — Clayton Kershaw failed to pitch at least seven innings for the first time in 18 starts since June 8. He allowed three earned runs for only the seventh time in 26 starts this season. But the Los Angeles Dodgers ace was still good enough to become the majors’ first 20-game winner of the season.
The lefty gave up three runs and seven hits while striking out nine in five innings of the Dodgers’ 14-5 blowout win over the Cubs in Chicago this afternoon. The Cubs tagged him for three runs in the first inning, but that was after Matt Kemp launched a three-run homer while the Dodgers were building a 6-0 lead.
Yasiel Puig added another three-run blast in the sixth to help Kershaw improve to 20-3. Mark Ellis homered twice for Los Angeles, which can clinch a playoff berth tonight if Milwaukee loses to Pittsburgh.
