This edition of “MIDWEST BEAT with Tom Lounges” features multi-instrumentalist CHRIS FUNK – a native and former resident of Valparaiso, Indiana.

Chris Funk’s musical journey has taken him from playing in the Valparaiso High School band and teaching guitar locally at Front Porch Music, to co-founding the Grammy-nominated and internationally popular group, THE DECEMBERISTS.

This show touch a bit on The Decemberists, but mostly focuses on Funk’s other band, BLACK PRAIRIE, who perform an all ages concert at the historic Memorial Opera House on Tuesday, September 16th.

CHAD CLIFFORD, owner of Front Porch Music, also guests on tonight’s radio program to chat with Chris about their shared Valparaiso roots. Front Porch Music is who presents the Black Prairie concert that brings Funk back for this hometown visit.

Black Prairie’s music is a brand of Americana that defies easy categorization, cross-pollinating a number of different styles while exposing the venerable, forgotten roots of folk and bluegrass.

Black Prairie’s line-up includes four-fifths of The Decemberists — Chris Funk, bassist Nate Query, accordionist Jenny Conlee, and drummer John Moen.   The group is rounded out by by vocalist/violinist Annalisa Tornfelt  and guitarist Jon Neufeld.

This program features selections from  Black Prairie’s newest album, “Fortune.”
