Charging documents show Phelps DUI tied to alcohol
Olympic champion Michael Phelps is facing five traffic charges, including three involving drunken driving, after being pulled over by police in Baltimore.
The Maryland Transportation Authority Police charged Phelps early Tuesday with DUI but weren’t specific about the substance they said affected his driving.
Now, online charging documents show that the charges include driving while impaired by alcohol, driving while under the influence of alcohol and driving a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. The other two charges from Tuesday’s incident are excessive speeding and crossing double lane lines in a tunnel on Interstate 95.
The court records do not yet indicate a defense attorney or a court date.
In a statement Tuesday, Phelps apologized and said he takes “full responsibility.”
