Charges Filed In 2010 Gary Crime Spree
Six people are accused of taking part in an August 20-10 social club break-in on Johnson Street in Gary that ended in the deaths of two men and netted the thieves very little cash.
Gary Police say 61-year-old former South Carolina police officer Franklin Simmons, owned the club where he was found shot to death in the basement. A 41-year-old Gary man, Kevin Champion, was shot to death as he sat in his vehicle parked outside his family-owned liquor store at 17th and Grant. Police say he was a secondary target.
Detectives submitted their paperwork to Lake County Superior Court yesterday afternoon. All six people are charged with murder, murder in perpetration of a robbery, robbery, burglary and attempted burglary. All but two are in custody.
