Casual Fridays – January 9th, 2014
Roger Hayward had just returned home from another drunken bender. He forgot about his dog left alone in the apartment for three days. He came back to a sobering mess. The poor animal defecated all over Hayward’s home and urinated on his pillow.
“I got mad, really mad,” Roger recalled of that day a decade ago. He repeatedly hit the dog so badly that he also hit rock bottom and melted into an emotional mess. “I had nobody,” he said with a sigh. “That was my reality.”
Roger’s reality has changed dramatically since that life-changing day of reckoning. After finding Him-with-a-captial-H, as well as himself, Roger moved to this area to begin, “It’s Gary’s Time.” The first-of-its-kind, not-for-profit program provides skills, job opportunities and hope to ex-offenders attempting to reenter society after serving behind bars. On today’s show, Roger is in the studio with us and he will publicly reveal a “big announcement” regarding his growing organization.
Also, Jerry immediately thought of his past as a political cartoonist when he heard about the terrorist killings of several political cartoonists and satirists at the French magazine, “Charlie Hebdo,” earlier this week. It’s a proudly radical publication that most Americans had never heard of until the ruthless assassinations by three radical extremists. The terrorist killings in Paris serve as another somber reminder that satirizing religious extremism is not merely a cartoonish endeavor. And that the notion of free speech doesn’t come free in a world badly needing it these days.
We’ll touch on that, and a whole lot more – casually, of course – in this week’s jam-packed episode.
