Casual Fridays – January 16th, 2015
It’s time for another Casual Friday! On today’s show, Jerry and Karen chat with Brian Cody from the Veterans Cafe & Grill in Merrillville, which can use your patronage to stay in business and help local vets in need. Earlier this week, Jerry had lunch at the café, located on Taft St. just north of U.S. 30, and the place was about empty. The joint is run by vets – to help vets – with some of the proceeds going to a shelter for homeless veterans of Gary. The cafe is hurting for business this winter while trying to make it to its 1-year anniversary this May. With all the trendy lip service given to our vets – “we support the troops” – this place can really use your support… so I posted this on social media.
Thanks to many of Jerry’s social media followers and to YOU, our Lakeshore listeners, the Café has seen a boom in business this week. Jerry’s Facebook post now has more than 900 likes and 3,500 shares across the region and beyond. You gotta love the power of social media AND of social conscience.
Later in the show, the duo talks with the nephew of Tony Zale, the Gary native who became a boxing legend, about his long-awaited book, “Tony Zale – The Man of Steel: His Toughest Battles Weren’t Fought Inside the Ring.”
Plus, we’ll explore dogs who bite their masters, the upcoming sentencing hearing for George Van Til, a local trucker who has logged three million miles (yes, three million!), and this week’s mondagreen lyric from Carrie Underwood’s “Before He Cheats.”
