Share Tweet Email

December 3, 2014 — Chris Nolte, Lakeshore Public Radio — The Lake County Coronor’s office says a dismembered body found in the trunk of a vehicle at a Griffith apartment complex is definitely that of 48-year-old David Krawczenia of Portage  — his death investigated as a murder.

Sheriff’s police say  63-year-old Thomas Smith of Hobart is accused of murdering him.   Krawczenia was last seen on Nov. 1st, the day he was meeting at Smith’s auto repair garage in Gary to settle a sizeable debt on a vehicle.

Police towed the car from the 1500 block of North Arbogast Street to the Lake County police garage, where they found the body.  The Coronor’s office says the Indiana State Police laboratory in Indianapolis made the identification.

Smith surrendered to officials at the Lake County Sheriff’s Department and is currently being held in a single-inmate cell at the Lake County Jail.
