72 Beams Arrive For New Nine-Span Bridge
August 14, 2013 — Work to replace the 75-year-old Nine Span Bridge across the Gibson rail yards in Hammond is moving closer toward completion later this year.
The 72 beams for a new concrete bridge were set this week. INDOT district spokesman Matt Deitchley says they came from a factory in Decatur, Indiana. Long semi-flatbed trucks loaded with the beams were escorted thru Lake County local streets by Indiana State Police. Deitchley says the new bridge will look like many other similar highway bridges.
Demolition crews began back in March to take down the historic iron bridge on Indianapolis Boulevard, with plans to re-use the final span at a trail site somewhere in Indiana.
Dunnet Bay Construction Co. of Glendale Heights, Illinois is the general contractor and has the $18-million contract to replace the bridge.
