Battle for post-season continues
(AP) — The race for the top spot in the American League Central has tightened up with Detroit’s lead trimmed to one over Kansas City. The Royals play in Cleveland again tonight while the Tigers try to rebound from a loss to the Chicago White Sox at home.
Checking the AL wild card race, Oakland and KC own the top two spots with Seattle two games out. The Mariners, who have lost 9 of the last 13, try to snap a three-game losing streak when they play at Toronto. The A’s host the Los Angeles Angels. The Indians are 3 1/2 games out of the wild card picture.
The Baltimore Orioles visit the New York Yankees as Derek Jeter enjoys his final regular season homestand in the Bronx. The Yankees, coming off a win over Baltimore, are four games out of the wild-card race so it’s unlikely that Jeter will be playing in October.
Also tonight in the AL, Tampa Bay plays at Boston while Texas hosts Houston.
Over in the National League, Pittsburgh and San Francisco hold the two wild-card spots with Milwaukee a distant five games out. The Pirates play in Atlanta while the Giants continue their NL West battle at Los Angeles. The Dodgers still own a 3 1/2 game lead over the Giants. The game features a solid pitching match-up with 18-9 Madison Bumgarner facing 15-8 Zack Greinke. The Brewers visit Cincinnati.
St. Louis, up by 2 1/2 games over the Pirates in the NL Central, visit the Chicago Cubs.
Also tonight, Washington hosts the New York Mets, Philadelphia is on the road at Miami while San Diego is home to Colorado.
The interleague contest has Arizona at Minnesota.
