Basketball Goals Removed From Park
July 22, 2013 — LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — City officials in Lafayette have removed a park’s basketball goals in hopes of reducing fights and rowdiness that had been happening among teenagers and young adults.
Crews removed the basketball goals this month at Columbian Park near downtown Lafayette. Parks department leaders say that the move had eliminated most troubles, but some people say the city overreacted.
Nearby resident Marilyn Spratt said that the park is a wonderful place for activities such as a recent Purdue Summer Concert Band concert. She says she worries about gangs moving into the area and believes taking down the basketball goals is a good step.
Purdue University senior Anthony Harris says he often plays basketball at Columbian Park and doesn’t understand the city’s decision.
