Ball State Revokes Sponsorship Of Five Charter Schools

Ball State University officials made final their decision Wednesday to revoke their sponsorship of five charter schools they see as underperforming.  As StateImpact Indiana’s Kyle Stokes reports, the schools will need to find new authorizers if they wish to remain open.

If they don’t find new authorizers, more charters will close at the end of this school year than in the combined twelve years since Indiana’s charter school law first passed.  The schools are Imagine Indiana Life Sciences Academy-East in Indianapolis, Imagine MASTer and Imagine Schools on Broadway in Fort Wayne, LEAD College Preparatory in Gary, and Christmon STEMM Academy in Richmond.  Two other schools withdrew their applications.  Those who defend the charter schools say they work with underserved and underprivileged students.  But Ball State officials decided in January to revoke the charters because, they say, the school’s leaders weren’t meeting the academic goals they themselves laid out in their founding documents.  For StateImpact Indiana, I’m Kyle Stokes.
